Who am I?

Updated: May 2, 2022

I was sitting at dinner with my girlfriend two or three nights ago and we started talking about work. I don't love what I do, but it pays fine and when work ends I leave and basically don't think about it again until I get up the next morning to start working again. She loves her job, on the other hand. She's passionate about what she does and genuinely cares about it. Whenever anyone says that every day they're excited about going to work they're lying, but she really does care about what she does and feels like she's making a difference in people's lives. I'm envious of that.

Anyway we kept eating and conversation moved on, as it inevitably does, ending up on me monologuing about how annoying it is that the Patriots and Bill Belichick seem to love absolutely nothing more than they love being weird on draft night. She listened, but has no real affinity for the NFL so didn't have much to add except that she said, yet again, that I should start a blog.

She is not the first person to ever tell me this but I always tell people the truth: there is so much sport-adjacent content produced by people who look and sound like me. I'm a white guy who grew up in an upper middle class family. I have never played any sport at a high level, just dabbling at lower levels at various sports. I was always coordinated but never an athlete, not that you asked for the scouting report. Really, what I am passionate about is sport. But you know who else is passionate about sport? Every single one of my friends and a good portion of the people in Melbourne who look like me and came from my background. So, a fair question for you to ask is: what's the point? Well, the point isn't really monetise this, it's just somewhere that I can share my thoughts.

There are two reasons that there's a photo of the great and powerful Bill Simmons on my front page: firstly, it's his fault that I have the gumption to even post these articles that I will write. He is really the pioneer of writing from a fan's perspective while also retaining a bent that is at least somewhat analytical. Secondly; he was anonymous at first as well just known as The Sport's Guy. My name is a shameless rip off of that.

My favourite sports are boxing, the AFL and NFL (I know that AFL and NFL are not sports but leagues and that is one of my biggest bug bears. However, I have no idea how to phrase that better and I don't have an editor) but I have a level of interest in the NBA and MMA generally. Though Dana White is probably my least favourite person in world sport. That's saying something, given how many people in world sport that I truly hate. My favourite teams are the New England Patriots and the Richmond Tigers.

I imagine that I will also get into pop culture issues just to really round out the stereotype. On that, listen to my podcast! (Kidding!) (For now) My favourite show of all time is The Sopranos and my favourite movie is The Godfather, just for something new. I can feel eyeballs rolling back into skulls as we speak. You people are lucky I didn't call this blog Clemenza's Gravy.

I don't really have any contacts and any news that I "break" is probably 100x removed from what actually happened (yes I did hear the Brett Lee/Kevin Spacey story). This blog is just my thoughts on what's happening in sport and pop culture, and I might dabble in my various annoyances with the state of politics in Australia.

This blog, really, is just for me and if anyone not in my immediate circle happens to read it I will be flabbergasted. But here we are, with this being my first blog.
